Chapter 8: Another jade pendant?
Chapter 8: Another jade pendant?
Meanwhile, Lin Fan had just finished browsing the market when his small electric cart was already piled high with goods.
"Let me think about what else I need. Hmm, that should be about it. I'll buy whatever else I need next time!" Lin Fan quickly glanced at the items he had purchased, most of which were daily necessities.
"This weather is unbearably hot! I need to go home and take a shower!" The weather in Chengdu is really strange. After walking around for more than an hour early in the morning, Lin Fan's clothes were already soaked with sweat. He rode his electric scooter home leisurely, whistling.
As soon as Lin Fan arrived at the apartment building, he stopped his car. An old man walked up to him and stared at him intently for a while, a look that made him quite uncomfortable.
The old man looked around for a while. Just as Lin Fan was getting ready to go upstairs with his things, the old man suddenly spoke up.
"Young man, you seem to be a fellow Daoist's son, right?" he asked with a slightly doubtful tone.
"Who are you?" Lin Fan didn't recognize the old man in front of him, so he didn't answer his question.
"Hehe, you don't recognize this old man? Your dad and I met when we were playing chess in the neighborhood. I used to visit your house before and saw your picture." The old man said kindly.
Lin Fan was speechless for a moment. His father used to like playing chess, so he knew quite a few people in the neighborhood. However, he hadn't been home for the past two years, so he didn't know most of them.
After a moment's thought, Lin Fan nodded: "Yes, Fellow Daoist Lin is my father. May I ask what brings you here, sir?"
The old man nodded gently upon hearing Lin Fan's answer: "Your father..." The old man seemed to want to say something but for some reason couldn't bring himself to say it.
Lin Fan's interest was piqued by the old man's hesitant expression. He thought to himself, "This old man clearly wants to ask me about my father. Could it be that my father has some unspeakable secret?"
"My dad and mom went back to their hometown last year. Is there something you want to ask me, sir?" Lin Fan took the initiative to start the conversation.
The old man thought for a moment and nodded: "Yes, I just wanted to ask, will your father come again if he has time?"
After all that, Lin Fan lost interest immediately: "I don't know either. He's planning to retire in the countryside with my mother, so it's unlikely he'll come back!"
Upon hearing this, the old man's face immediately turned somewhat troubled. He sighed and stopped talking.
Lin Fan, unsure of what to say and carrying a large pile of things, asked, "Sir, is there anything else you need?"
The old man understood the meaning behind Lin Fan's words and shook his head. Seeing this, Lin Fan politely said, "Goodbye, sir."
Just as I turned and reached the entrance of the building, I heard someone calling out behind me again: "Young man, young man, wait a minute!"
The old man was out of breath from running, and when he arrived in front of Lin Fan, he was still panting heavily. Lin Fan didn't say anything, but just looked at him with a puzzled expression, and then moved back a little, as if afraid that the old man would fall to the ground at any moment.
"Young...young man...this old man...would like to...ask you for a favor!"
Seeing the panting old man, Lin Fan instinctively reached out to help him. There was nothing he could do; he could only blame his kindness.
"Grandpa, don't rush. Let's rest for a bit and talk about it again! I'll help if I can!" Lin Fan didn't make any absolute statements. If the old man came up with some strange ideas later, he wouldn't be able to help him.
After a while, the old man calmed himself down before speaking: "This old man just wanted to ask, you know about your father's past collecting of antiques, right?"
Lin Fan nodded: "I know that, but he only deals in counterfeit goods. Could something have happened?"
The old man quickly waved his hand: "Nothing's wrong, it's just that he bought a jade pendant before, and I remembered it a while ago. I thought I liked it, so I wanted to ask your dad if he would be willing to sell it! But he's not here right now, and I can't get in touch with him!"
Hearing the old man mention the jade pendant, Lin Fan subconsciously thought of the fish-shaped jade pendant, but his expression remained unchanged: "I don't know about that, but he took it to be appraised before, and the experts all said it was a fake and had no collectible value!"
"Bullshit experts, what do they know! That's..." The old man seemed to hate those so-called experts, and subconsciously stomped his foot and cursed, but there was a second half of his sentence that he obviously didn't finish. Lin Fan, of course, also noticed this problem.
The old man clearly didn't want to discuss the matter further. After a few seconds of pause, he spoke again: "Since your father isn't here, could you go home and look for it? Although the jade pendant is fake, I really like its appearance. If you can find it, I'm willing to pay a high price for it."
Lin Fan looked troubled. He didn't know which piece the old man was referring to, but it was most likely the fish-shaped jade pendant. After all, he had chosen that piece at first glance from among many jade pendants.
Seeing that Lin Fan remained silent, the old man, unsure of Lin Fan's thoughts, hesitated for a moment before continuing, "If all else fails, why don't you call your dad and ask him where that fish-shaped jade pendant he bought is? Just say that Old Wang from Building 3 told you, and he'll definitely agree."
Lin Fan was startled and frowned slightly. Just as he had guessed, he said, "Alright! I'll ask him when I have time. After all, it's his stuff, and I can't just make a decision on my own!" Seeing this, Lin Fan could only give a perfunctory reply for now.
Old Wang's face lit up instantly upon hearing Lin Fan's words. Oblivious to Lin Fan's expression, he patted Lin Fan's shoulder and gave him a thumbs-up: "What a fine young man! Have you found someone yet? Want me to introduce you to someone?"
Upon hearing this, Lin Fan quickly shook his head: "No need, sir, I'm still young and don't want to be in a relationship right now!"
"Oh dear, that's such a pity! I know every family in these seven or eight buildings. One of the girls is a live streamer, and she's very pretty. She'd be a perfect match for you!" Old Wang looked regretful and shook his head repeatedly.
Lin Fan thought to himself, "Wow! *n".
He didn't mean anything by it, but are those beautiful live streamers someone that just anyone can mess with? If you don't have some ability, people won't even bother with you. Lin Fan is well aware of his current abilities. Although Lin Fan believes that with his looks, becoming a live streamer would be a piece of cake, his personality just isn't suited for it.
"Alright, sir, I'm not talking to you anymore! I have a ton of stuff in my hands, it's really uncomfortable carrying it all the time, I'm going home now!" Lin Fan said, turning around and leaving without daring to linger for another second.
"Sigh...this young man is quite shy. It's just dating, isn't it? When I was young, I was known as a heartthrob...!"
Lin Fan clearly hadn't heard what the old man said. He only breathed a sigh of relief after entering the elevator, as he was genuinely afraid the old man would suddenly chase after him.
What had just happened filled him with curiosity, and he just wanted to go home and study the jade pendant as soon as possible. Little did he know that a huge surprise was waiting for him at home!
