Chapter 2095 August 15th
The sky was bright.
Gendarmerie Headquarters.
Shogo Onodera, his face grim, was drinking in silence.
At that moment, the office door was pushed open.
He looked up, about to curse, when he saw that it was Sagami Umezumi who had entered. Onodera Shogo nodded expressionlessly and continued drinking in silence.
"Onodera-kun." Umezu Sagami said.
"Sagami-kun, is there something you need?" Onodera Shogo asked calmly.
“Onodera-kun,” said Sagami Umezumi, “I want to talk to you about Biligoru.”
Onodera Shogo's eyes narrowed, his gaze turning gloomy and fierce. "Sagami-kun, it's been so long, and given the current situation, I have no interest in this matter anymore."
"Don't you want to know who betrayed you, who betrayed the Empire, Onodera-kun?" said Sagami Umezumi.
Shogo Onodera looked at Umezumi Sagami, who met his gaze with a resolute expression.
“How much do you know about that?” he asked.
"Onodera-kun, please rest assured, I have no intention of pursuing anything. Besides, your and Kawada-kun's starting point was also to help the military police arrest wanted criminals," said Sagami Umezumi.
Onodera Shogo nodded slightly, then looked at Sagami Umezumi, "What did you find out?"
He put down the bottle, lit a cigarette, took a deep drag, and said, "Is it Araki Harima? Or Miyazaki Kentaro?"
"So, Onodera-kun, you also suspect Miyazaki Kentaro?" Sagami Umezumi asked.
“At the time, the only people who knew the truth were Atsuto, Miyazaki Kentaro, Araki Harima and me,” Onodera Shogo said. “Atsuto couldn’t possibly have a problem, and I can’t have a problem either, so the problem must lie between Miyazaki Kentaro and Araki Harima.”
He snorted and said, "In fact, I suspect Miyazaki Kentaro the most, but unfortunately, Master Atsuto trusts Miyazaki very much."
Onodera Shogo looked at Sagami Umezumi and asked, "Sagami-kun hasn't answered my question yet."
“Kentaro Miyazaki,” said Umezumi Sagami directly, stating a name.
“Evidence? Reasons?” Onodera Shogo said, “Although Atsuto is no longer in Shanghai, Miyazaki has Imamura behind him, and he also has Chu Mingyu and others as his backers in Nanjing. He is also a member of the Special Higher Police, and he has deep-rooted influence in Shanghai.”
"The Third Political Security Bureau is now completely under Miyazaki's control."
Shogo Onodera said with a serious expression, "Even we shouldn't take action against him without evidence."
“There is no direct evidence,” said Sagami Umezumi.
Shogo Onodera frowned.
“Although there is no direct evidence, my intuition tells me that there is something wrong with Kentaro Miyazaki,” said Umezumi Sagami. “You should know that I have been secretly investigating Kentaro Miyazaki.”
"What have you found out?" Shogo Onodera asked. "If you have evidence, I will personally lead a team to arrest them immediately."
“There is no substantial evidence,” said Sagami Umezumi. “Many suspicions do not actually have a specific target until I noticed the Biliglu incident. After this period of secret investigation, I learned what the four of you were planning behind the Biliglu incident.”
He said to Shogo Onodera, "In that case, the suspects are only Araki Harima and Miyazaki Kentaro. This greatly encourages me, as it means I am almost 80% sure that I have identified Miyazaki Kentaro as the suspect."
“I was one of the four people, so why didn’t anyone suspect me?” Onodera Shogo said.
“Many things happened before you came to Shanghai from Qingdao, so you couldn’t possibly be that person,” said Sagami Umezumi.
"Have you been investigating all along?" Shogo Onodera asked.
“Of course, these investigations are not my achievement alone,” said Sagami Umezumi. “Naito Kotsuba, Kikube Hiroo, and Chikitahara Tsukasa all conducted related investigations.”
He told Shogo Onodera, "Araki Harima also came into my view at one point, but after my investigation, the possibility of Araki Harima having problems is low. Overall, I am very confident that I can focus my suspicions on Kentaro Miyazaki."
“After all that, there’s still no evidence,” Onodera Shogo said, shaking his head.
“Yes, for an Imperial agent, for someone with deep connections within the Empire, I have no evidence to take action against him, or rather, the evidence I currently possess is insufficient,” said Sagami Umezumi. “But what if this person isn’t one of the Empire’s own, but is Chinese?”
"Chinese?" Shogo Onodera was stunned. "What do you mean?"
“What I mean is,” said Sagami Umezumi, “we have never really suspected Kentaro Miyazaki, or rather, even if we had suspicions, we haven’t taken any concrete action. The fundamental reason is that we know he is Japanese, one of our own.”
“But if this person is not Kentaro Miyazaki, but Cheng Qianfan, he is the Chinese Cheng Qianfan!” said Umezumi Sagami.
“I still don’t quite understand,” Shogo Onodera murmured, his eyes filled with shock.
“It just popped into my head,” said Sagami Umezumi. “I’ve been studying Kentaro Miyazaki’s file carefully, and finally, I noticed a detail by chance.”
He told Onodera Shogo, "According to the files, Miyazaki Kentaro and Cheng Qianfan look very similar, like twins. It was Miyazaki Kentaro who killed Cheng Qianfan on the orders of Kagesa Eiichi and then impersonated Cheng Qianfan."
"This detail has gone unnoticed by anyone, and no one has ever suspected anything," said Sagami Umezumi.
“The records state that Miyazaki Kentaro killed Cheng Qianfan and then impersonated him,” he said to Onodera Shogo. “But what if it’s the other way around? Why can’t it be that Cheng Qianfan killed Miyazaki Kentaro and then impersonated him, successfully deceiving Kagesa Eiichi, who didn’t suspect anything, and the records he kept became the strongest proof that Cheng Qianfan impersonated Miyazaki Kentaro.”
“I understand what you mean.” Shogo Onodera took a few puffs of his cigarette, stubbed it out, and said, “But I still find it too incredible.”
He said to Sagami Umezumi, "It is possible that Cheng Qianfan killed Miyazaki Kentaro, but how could he successfully impersonate Miyazaki Kentaro? How could he gain Kagesa-kun's trust? It's simply impossible."
“I understand what you mean.” Sagami Umezumi nodded. “I’ve thought about this seriously too, and I’ve been stuck on this issue for a long time. Then I thought of a possibility.”
He said to Onodera Shogo, "There is a possibility that the Miyazaki Kentaro that Kagesa Eiichi first met was actually Cheng Qianfan in disguise. This would explain why Cheng Qianfan was able to gain Kagesa Eiichi's trust without any flaws later on."
“Sagami-kun, I have to admit that your idea is very creative, and even logically plausible,” Onodera Shogo said. “However, unfortunately, what you’ve said is just your speculation, and there is no substantial evidence whatsoever.”
“No, it’s different,” said Sagami Umezumi. “I know these are just guesses, but it’s different. Before, I was investigating Miyazaki Kentaro, but now it’s different. Now I’m investigating Cheng Qianfan. With this suspicion, my thinking has opened up. If I continue to investigate, the suspicious points about Cheng Qianfan will be magnified infinitely, and it won’t be so difficult to find any evidence against him.”
“I understand what you mean,” Shogo Onodera said thoughtfully. “Although I remain cautious about this, I am willing to support your investigation.”
He snorted coldly and said, "I will personally find this bastard hiding among us and tear him to pieces!"
Onodera Shogo looked at Sagami Umezumi and asked, "What are you going to do next?"
“I’m going to see someone,” said Sagami Umezumi.
"Who?" Onodera Shogo asked.
“Araki Harima!” said Sagami Umezumi. “Araki Harima is a veteran agent of the Shanghai Special Higher Police, and he is also a good friend of Miyazaki Kentaro. He knows Miyazaki Kentaro very well. Araki had never suspected Miyazaki before, but now that he has learned that the other party may be Cheng Qianfan, a Chinese man, his familiarity and understanding of Cheng Qianfan can help us find a lot of clues.”
“Okay.” Shogo Onodera stood up, picked up his military uniform hanging on the coat rack and put it on. “I’ll go with you to see Araki Harima.”
“Alright.” Sagami Umezumi nodded. “Let’s not delay, let’s go see Araki now.”
He said to Shogo Onodera, "I called Araki to arrange a meeting and told him that I had something important to discuss with him, along with you."
……
Asakusa Izakaya.
Sagami Umezumi and Onodera Shogo had been waiting for a long time.
The two spoke in hushed tones, discussing how they would talk to and communicate with Araki Harima when he arrived, in order to verify their findings.
Just then, footsteps could be heard outside.
“It must be Araki-kun who’s here,” said Sagami Umezumi.
The door was opened.
As expected, it was Araki Harima who came in.
“Araki-kun,” said Sagami Umezumi, as he and Onodera Shogo rose to greet him.
Then, Saeki Umezumi's eyes narrowed sharply.
He watched in horror as Araki Harima suddenly drew his gun.
"Araki-kun!" Sagami Umezumi cried out in alarm.
Bang bang bang!
Araki Harima fired three shots, all three bullets hitting Onodera Shogo in the head at close range.
Sagami Umezumi was stunned.
He immediately realized he had made a mistake!
The problem is not with Cheng Qianfan, nor is it that the Chinese Cheng Qianfan killed Kentaro Miyazaki and then impersonated Kentaro Miyazaki.
Kentaro Miyazaki is one of the Empire's own people!
The real problem is Araki Harima, whom he previously thought had an extremely low probability of success.
Sagami Umezu instinctively reached for his gun.
However, he was too slow.
When Araki Harima shot and killed Onodera Shogo, he did not hesitate for a moment and immediately pointed his gun at Sagami Umezu.
For the past year or so, Sagami Umezumi has been targeting Miyazaki-kun. Now that they've run into each other, killing one or two is the same thing, so he might as well help his friend Miyazaki Kentaro get rid of this despicable dog, Sagami Umezumi.
Bang bang bang!
Boom!
Araki Harima fired repeatedly at Sagami Umezumi.
Sagami Umezumi was shot and fell down, but even in this situation, he still managed to draw his gun and fire, hitting Araki Harima, who was standing right next to him.
Outside in the corridor, the sound of hurried footsteps could be heard. Military police rushed in and were stunned by what they saw.
……
"What?" Cheng Qianfan suddenly stood up.
The call was made by Tomohiro Okada, a trusted subordinate of Shogo Onodera.
Tomohiro Okada told him something shocking:
Araki Harima of the Special Higher Police shot and killed Onodera Shogo and seriously wounded Sagami Umezumi. Araki Harima was also seriously injured.
"How is he?" Cheng Qianfan asked.
"Lieutenant Colonel Zuo Shang has been shot multiple times and is in critical condition. He is still being treated," said Tomohiro Okada. "Araki Harima has also been shot and is unconscious. His condition is not optimistic."
"Where is he now?" Cheng Qianfan asked.
“Army Hospital,” Tomohiro Okada said.
"I understand," Cheng Qianfan said in a deep voice. "I will get there as soon as possible."
……
After hanging up the phone, Cheng Qianfan's expression was gloomy and uncertain.
"The military police called to say that Araki shot and killed Onodera Shogo and wounded Sagami Umezu Sumire," he told Li Hao. "Both Sagami Umezu Sumire and Araki are now in critical condition and being treated."
Cheng Qianfan asked Li Hao and Haozai, "Do you think this is true?"
He now highly doubts the authenticity of this matter, because it is simply too unbelievable. He cannot help but suspect that there is something wrong with it, and that it may even be a trap set by the enemy to lure him into a trap.
“It is indeed very suspicious,” Haozai said. “It’s simply unbelievable.”
“I think that such an absurd reason actually proves that it’s not a trap,” Li Hao said after thinking for a moment. “Brother Fan, if the enemy wanted to set a trap, they wouldn’t use such an absurd reason.”
"That makes sense." Cheng Qianfan nodded slightly.
He looked at the two of them and said, "So, you agree that I should go?"
"No." Li Hao and Haozai both shook their heads.
"Brother Fan, you can't go anywhere now."
"Brother Fan, we are safest when we are with our brothers. We must be extra careful, especially in times like these."
Cheng Qianfan picked up the cigarette case on the table, took out a cigarette, lit it, tossed the case to the two men, took a light puff, and fell into deep thought.
“Brother Fan, be careful,” Li Hao said. “I went back to Yandeli a couple of days ago, and Aunt Ma said that someone was secretly looking into your childhood.”
Cheng Qianfan's eyes narrowed; he vaguely understood.
Just then, a commotion arose in the corridor outside, along with the sound of hurried footsteps.
"Why don't we go see what's wrong?" Cheng Qianfan frowned and said to Haozai.
"Yes, Brother Fan."
Soon, Haozai returned. He ran back, and as soon as he pushed open the door, he was panting and opened his mouth wide, "Brother Fan, I surrender, I surrender."
"What?" Cheng Qianfan's heart skipped a beat, and he immediately thought of something and asked.
"The Japanese have surrendered!" Hao Zai said. "Their broadcast announced their surrender."
