Chapter 71 Wolf?!
Chapter 71 Wolf?!
Seeing Vasily's guilty expression, Lu Ye waved his hand and said calmly, "It's alright. We're all doing fine now. I've gotten some things I wanted by chance."
Vasily nodded with relief when he saw that Lu Ye did not blame him.
"Who exactly are you?" Lu Ye looked at him and asked the question that had been nagging at him.
Vasily hesitated for a moment, then dipped his finger in the liquor in his glass and drew a pattern of a bat and the earth combined on the table. He said in a low voice, "GRU. Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces."
Lu Ye's pupils contracted slightly as he thought, "Damn, you can tell me this? I was just asking casually! Loyalty really works!"
That is the Russian military's most advanced and most secretive intelligence agency.
"Then how did you, a high-ranking GRU agent, manage to infiltrate our cannon fodder battalion, which doesn't even have proper bulletproof vests?" Lu Ye hesitated for a moment before continuing to press.
Vasily sighed and explained, "That's a long story. I infiltrated there to investigate Major Vorov."
"Worov?"
"Yes. My superior suspects that Vorov has been embezzling huge sums of military funds for a long time." Vasily leaned closer.
"The Ministry of Defense allocates a large sum of money every month, requiring frontline troops to recruit foreign retired special forces soldiers with rich combat experience to supplement their combat strength. However, Vorov received this money but did not use it to recruit any real veterans."
"He colluded with several notorious human traffickers and unscrupulous brokers around the world, using the lure of high salaries to lure desperate people into becoming cannon fodder."
"Then he pocketed all the resettlement allowance that should have been distributed."
Upon hearing this, Lu Ye's mind raced like lightning.
He finally understood! He had wanted to ask about the doubts surrounding the paper records, but Yuri stopped him.
It turns out Yuri already knew about the trickery involved.
Vasily continued, "But someone leaked the secret. My identity was discovered by Vorov beforehand."
"So he used someone else to do his dirty work, arranging for me to lead you into that doomed position. Once I'm dead, the trail will be completely cut off."
Lu Ye took a deep breath, and all the causes and consequences finally connected.
"Have you found enough evidence?" Lu Ye asked. "Is it enough to bring down Wolf?"
Vasily looked at Lu Ye with a regretful expression. "There are only partial transfer records. That's not enough to warrant a death sentence."
"Worov was saved by a high-ranking military official in the Southern Theater. The reason given was that the situation at the front was critical, and changing commanders in the midst of battle would affect morale."
At this point, Vasily's eyes suddenly lit up: "I didn't know you were still alive back then."
"If you can step in and provide additional witness testimony, my superior might be able to completely bring down Wolf!"
Lu Ye looked at Vasily's hopeful eyes and remained silent for a full half minute.
Finally, he shook his head, his tone extremely calm: "I will not testify for you."
Vasily paused for a moment.
"I'm now a member of the Undertaker Company's Black Scythe Squad." Lu Ye looked directly into Vasily's eyes. "Even if you can bring him down, what about the high-ranking military official behind him? I can't drag my teammates into that kind of high-level political vortex."
I hope you can understand my situation.
Looking at the determination in Lu Ye's eyes, Vasily nodded with a wry smile: "I understand. Actually, I was already mentally prepared before I came."
"Is your superior officer... the female officer in the corridor?" Lu Ye asked tentatively.
Vasily nodded.
"What's their background?"
Vasily shook his head, remaining cryptic: "I really can't say."
"Holy crap! I can't even tell you 50% loyalty?" Lu Ye understood.
This woman's background is probably incredibly powerful.
Afterwards, the two ordered a few drinks and began to chat about their experiences on the battlefield and their daily lives.
About an hour later, the two walked out of the bar and chatted as they walked to the entrance of the main medical building.
Vasily stopped and suddenly said, "Lu, actually, there's another matter I wanted to discuss with you today. There's a task I'd like to ask for your opinion on."
"What mission?" Lu Ye was slightly taken aback. "Should I go up and call Captain Yuri down so you can coordinate?"
"No." Vasily shook his head, his eyes turning serious. "This mission is only for you; it doesn't require the rest of the Black Scythe Squad."
Lu Ye frowned slightly: "It's inconvenient for me to leave the team to operate alone. Besides, I need Captain Yuri's permission to take on jobs on my own."
"As long as you agree, we'll handle the rest of the procedures and formalities." Vasily looked at Lu Ye earnestly.
"Actually, I originally wanted to refuse this task for you because it's too dangerous. But after seeing you today, I remembered your performance yesterday. I think I still need to ask for your opinion."
Lu Ye hesitated for a moment: "Can I know what kind of mission it is?"
"Top secret." Vasily lowered his voice. "If you agree, you'll depart tonight. You'll know the destination after you board the helicopter."
Faced with this top-secret mission in complete darkness, Lu Ye became even more hesitant.
His fate is now determined by the days; going on an unknown mission carries too many uncertainties.
"Let me think about it," Lu Ye said.
"Okay." Vasily nodded, glancing at his watch. "I'll come back to you at four o'clock this afternoon. Just tell me your answer then."
The two embraced again, and Vasily turned and walked away quickly.
-----------------
One o'clock in the afternoon.
In the rest and recuperation area, there is an open-air restaurant called "Caucasian Barbecue".
This is the most expensive place in the entire camp, and also the only place where you can eat fresh Wagyu beef and air-freighted seafood.
Lu Ye, Yuri, Ruslan, Roman, Artyom, and Eugene sat around a round table.
On the table were tomahawk steaks, sizzling lamb chops, and several bottles of high-end vodka.
"Come on! Let's toast to Lu, who stole the show last night!" Roman raised his glass and shouted.
"To our sharpshooter!" Artyom echoed, raising his glass.
The glasses clinked together loudly, and the wine was poured down their throats, creating an extremely lively atmosphere.
After a few rounds of drinks, Yuri put down his knife and fork and looked at Lu Ye sitting next to him: "Did you see your friend this morning?"
Lu Ye nodded.
He put down his glass, hesitated for a moment, then looked at Yuri and asked, "Boss, who exactly is Vorov?"
The once lively dinner table fell silent for a moment.
The others exchanged glances, then continued eating their meat, but their ears perked up.
Yuri gave Lu Ye a deep look, took out a cigarette from his pocket and lit it: "I can explain it to you clearly, but you have to promise me one thing first: what you need to do now is improve your strength."
Looking at Yuri's concerned eyes, Lu Ye nodded: "Okay. I agree."
Yuri exhaled a puff of smoke and lowered his voice: "I believe that during the final retreat in the Kalinovka assault, you also noticed that Vorov seemed to want to attack you."
Lu Ye nodded: "Yes, I noticed that you guys were covering for me at the time."
