Chapter 30: The Old Lady Dies of Anger
Chapter 30: The Old Lady Dies of Anger
Chapter 30: Chapter 30: The Old Lady Dies of AngerUpon the Old Madam’s command, the most formidable maids from Fushou Courtyard immediately set off for Haitang Courtyard.
Guarding the gate was Granny Liu.
She had served in the Lu Family for many years and recognized everyone close to the Old Madam, especially the intimidating Granny Zhou leading the charge.
She hurriedly greeted them with courtesy: "Elder Sister, what wind blows you here today?"
Granny Zhou, full of airs, snapped, "Out of the way!"
Granny Liu’s smile froze, but she didn’t budge.
Granny Zhou impatiently glared at her: "Didn’t you hear me? Move aside!"
Granny Liu replied, "May I ask what brings Elder Sisters to Haitang Courtyard so early?"
Granny Zhou barked, "Do I need to explain myself to a mere gatekeeper like you? Scram!"
"What’s all the racket about this early in the morning?"
Nanny Wan slammed the half-washed garment in her basin back into the water!
Only then did she remember it wasn’t her own clothing but the Young Madam’s. Panicking, she scurried to pick it up and clumsily dusted it off.
Afterward, with an exasperated expression, she came to the gate and told Granny Zhou, "This is the Eldest Young Madam’s courtyard. If you want to enter, did the Eldest Young Madam grant permission?"
Granny Zhou coldly sneered, "Nanny Wan, Granny Liu, you’ve both grown quite bold, haven’t you? Even daring to block me!"
Nanny Wan akimboed her hands: "So what if I block you?"
Granny Zhou straightened her back and declared, "I am the Eldest Young Master’s wet nurse! He was raised on my milk, one mouthful at a time! Even in his courtyard, I’m invited in with utmost respect. Is the Eldest Young Madam more esteemed than the Eldest Young Master now?"
"Then why don’t you go to the Eldest Young Master’s courtyard? What’re you doing at our Haitang Courtyard?"
"You—"
Granny Zhou was livid. Seeing that she was about to be dragged into circles by Nanny Wan’s words, she decided not to waste energy on arguing and attempted to force her way in.
But Nanny Wan didn’t take kindly to such antics and shoved her down to the ground.
That push ignited a full-on brawl between both sides.
Granny Liu hesitated at first, wary since people from the Old Madam’s courtyard carried a different weight compared to Lin Wan’er’s people.
But seeing how fiercely Nanny Wan fought, she gritted her teeth and charged in to help.
The Old Madam’s maids got beaten until they fled with their heads covered. Realizing she was losing, Granny Zhou shamefully ran to the outer courtyard to round up some stable hands and guards—over a dozen of them!
Nanny Wan and Granny Liu were promptly subdued.
Granny Zhou led the group of stable hands into Haitang Courtyard.
"Where’s the silver hidden?" Granny Zhou made a sweeping gesture. "
Lu Xingzhou didn’t immediately punish Tan’er.
Meng Qianqian knew her father-in-law all too well—he was selfish to his core and valued reputation above all else. He’d sacrifice anything for it.
Lu Xingzhou said, "Granny Zhou, you have served faithfully for years. Now that you’re older, it’s not suitable for you to continue working."
Granny Zhou’s face fell. "Master!"
The Old Madam was livid. Pointing at Tan’er, she exclaimed, "This maid beat people up, and instead of dismissing her, you’re sending away Xiao-ge’er’s wet nurse? Are you trying to anger me to death?"
Lu Xingzhou said, "Mother—"
The Old Madam clutched her chest dramatically. "So you think I’m old—useless—just a burden—"
Tan’er crossed her arms and muttered, "Want to be young again? That’s easy. Go to the Grand Commander in the Capital City, and I guarantee, in the blink of an eye, you’ll become his grandson!"
"You—"
The Old Madam fainted from rage!
